Stalagmites in Ashigakubo

There are three famous stalactite spots in Chichibu (秩父三大氷柱). Today I went to see the Ashigakubo stalagtites (あしがくぼの氷柱). This one is not too far from the station.

I first thought that these stalagmites were natural, but they are, in fact, man-made, with water hoses spraying water all winter. Nonetheless, the ice illuminated from below offers a spectacular view.

Do not let the photos below fool you; the place was packed with people.
My micro 4/3 is not the best in low light, but it still delivered great shots.

Trains occasionally go through this spot. I may have gotten a better shot with a bigger zoom and a different angle.
